In Dancing in the Dark: A Cultural History of the Great Depression, author and cultural critic Morris Dickstein details how the arts delivered a catharsis of pain and an evangel of hope in the social collapse that reigned in the 1930s. Painting, literature, film, music, theater, and design were then so integral to the resurrection of American society.

But what is it about that era that makes us inevitably think about the times we are passing through this year? Now and then, art not only acts as an agent of resiliency, but it also helps people face and cope with hard times, taking the actual context as a tool to transform it from something negative into some kind of strangely beautiful form of expression. From this idea (and the time slowdown that quarantine gave us), We The Cool Magazine is born.

We are facing times where it is crucial to observe and listen before speaking out — to learn how to stay still but still be aware — to realize that if we want to change something, we have to start by changing ourselves. We need to put the brakes on fear and guilt for calling out the truth — to act according to our empathy and our moral compass instead of only “reacting” to hashtags and Twitter threads — to open our minds and dare to rethink how we were taught to think.

Now more than ever, new forms of art, triggered by these latest series of events, have shed light on what humankind is capable of in a period of global trials. People are finally taking out their masks of indifference and we want We The Cool Magazine to be that place where everyone who is creating honest content, can have a voice.

We believe that hard times shall pass, but beauty and art remain forever.

Sincerely,

We The Cool Magazine
